In memory of James OBrien – Shamus

Shamus was first diagnosed in 2008 and had an oesophageal for adenocavcinoma. He underwent chemotherapy first to shrink it before the operation. He was in and out of hospital a number of times with chest infections and when his COPD was worse.

In 2013 he was diagnosed with bone cancer, we were told that this time he would not be cured. He underwent radiotherapy to help with the pain just before Christmas. Inbetween treatments Shamus was cared for by the distract nurse and our doctors, as well as the MacMillan nurse. In May last year Shamus went into Myton at Coventry for respite. He always said he would not go in to a hospice. He was in there for two weeks, the staff could not have been more helpful, it was so different from the hospital as staff had time to care for him which really helped him come to terms with his illness. Also what a difference when visiting him he could see his granddaughters which he could not when in hospital and the staff would explain everything to him.

When he came home he then started to go to the day unit which I could not praise enough. He looked forward to Wednesdays. He really enjoyed his time and the staff were great. The last time he went was on the 17/12/2014 he was so happy he was having his Christmas dinner. Christmas was his favourite time of the year; he was like a big kid, he had a great time. This was to be the last time he would go as he passed away on the evening of the 18/12 /2014. So Christmas was not a happy time for us as a family.

Shamus’ wish was to have no flowers at his funeral apart from his immediate family only but donations to Coventry Myton hospice. The amount raised in lieu of flowers was £269 – Shamus would have been proud of this. I would like to thank all those that gave.

On 2nd of August Shamus’ son Anthony will be doing the Myton Hospice cycle challenge. Shamus would be so proud that funds for Myton are being raised in his memory and anybody that wishes to donate can do so either on Anthony’s JustGiving page or by donating on this page.

I would just like to thank all the staff at the hospice for their care.
