    This study day runs from 09:30 - 16:30, and combines four topics:

    09:15 Registration and refreshments.

     

    09:30 - 11:00 Nutrition and Hydration Issues in Palliative and End of Life Care:


    Learning Outcomes/Session Content

    • Concerns expressed by patients and families regarding the giving or withholding of clinically assisted nutrition and hydration, specifically in end of life care.

    • The evidence about the effectiveness of and the legal position regarding clinically assisted nutrition and hydration, specifically in end of life care.

    • Consideration of the communication skills needed to address the concerns raised by patients and families regarding the giving or withholding of clinically assisted nutrition and hydration.


    11:30 - 13:00 Managing Breathlessness:


    Learning Outcomes/Session Content

    • Explain the basic anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.

    • Define breathlessness.

    • Explore the “Breathing/Thinking/Functioning” model of breathlessness.

    • Identify and practice techniques for managing breathlessness.


    13:00 - 14:00 Lunch

     

    14:00 - 15:30 Motor Neurone Disease (MND):


    Learning Outcomes/Session Content

    • Define MND

    • Describe the challenging symptoms associated with MND, and how to manage them

    • Discuss how multidisciplinary team working supports patients with MND

    • Explore issues associated with the withdrawal of Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV)


    15:30 - 16:30 Managing Boundaries - Is it possible to care too much?


    Learning Outcomes/Session Content: You will explore:

    • What are Boundaries?

    • Why Do We Need Them?

    • What’s Okay/ Not Okay?

    • Boundary Violations

    • How Do We Use Them?

    • How to Set Boundaries

    • What’s Your Responsibility?
