    Learn how to assess and manage nausea and vomiting in palliative care, and develop your skills in assessing spirituality.


  • This day runs from 09:15 - 16:00 and combines two workshops.

    09:30 - 12:30 Management of Nausea and Vomiting in Palliative Care.


    Description: An interactive workshop examining nausea and vomiting from a holistic perspective.

    Learning Outcomes

    • Define nausea & vomiting, & differentiate between other similar symptoms in the emetic process.

    • Describe how nausea & vomiting might impact on QOL.

    • Explain the physiology of nausea & vomiting.

    • List common causes & describe signs & symptoms.

    • List some useful questions to ask when assessing the patient’s symptoms.

    • Demonstrate a knowledge of some drug and non-drug measures to manage nausea & vomiting.


    Suitable for health and social care staff who care for people with life limiting conditions.

    13:00 - 16:00 Assessing Spirituality


    Description: A chance to explore and develop your understanding of the meaning of spirituality, and apply this to your assessment of patients.

    Learning Outcomes

    • Identify key concepts in spirituality.

    • Describe spiritual distress and some of its causes.

    • Discuss some of the formal spiritual awareness tools which are available.

    • Discuss the diversity of religions, beliefs and cultures, and their impact on spiritual needs.

    • Demonstrate confidence in conducting a spiritual assessment interview.
