Matt Western visits Warwick Myton Hospice to discuss services and funding pressures

We were pleased to welcome Matt Western, MP for Warwick and Leamington, to our Warwick Myton Hospice as he met with our Chair of Trustees, Sarah Faulkner, and CEO, Ruth Freeman, to discuss the vital care we provide across Coventry and Warwickshire and the increasing funding pressures facing the hospice sector.

The visit provided an opportunity to share first-hand how our specialist teams support people living with a life-limiting illness and their families at some of the most difficult times in their lives.

Discussions focused on the growing demand for hospice care, the financial challenges facing the sector, and the urgent need for sustainable funding reform. Like many hospices across the country, The Myton Hospices rely heavily on the generosity of our local community to continue providing our services free of charge. While demand and costs continue to rise, statutory funding has not kept pace, placing significant pressure on our ability to plan and grow services for the future.

We are working closely with Hospice UK to advocate for fair and sustainable funding for hospices nationwide. Reform is essential to ensure that hospice care is accessible to all who need it, now and in the future.

Sarah Faulkner, Chair of Trustees at The Myton Hospices, said:

It was a pleasure to welcome Matt Western to Warwick Myton Hospice and to speak openly about both the extraordinary care delivered by our teams and the very real challenges we face. Hospice care is key to our community, and it is vital that we secure long-term funding reform to protect these services for future generations. We are grateful for Matt’s continued support and interest in our work.

Ruth Freeman, CEO at The Myton Hospices, said:

We appreciated the opportunity to discuss the pressures facing hospices and to highlight the impact this has on the people and families we support. Visits like this are invaluable in helping decision-makers understand both the complexity and the compassion at the heart of hospice care. We look forward to continuing to work together to ensure our communities receive the care they deserve.

Matt Western MP said:

The Warwick Myton Hospice is a vital local service for Warwick and Leamington, so it was a pleasure to meet with Sarah and Ruth to discuss the fantastic care that their team provides – all of it free to patients. A key element of my work is listening to and supporting charities and businesses across Warwick and Leamington, to understand the challenges they face and support wherever I can, so I look forward to continuing to work closely with The Myton Hospices over the coming years.

Despite increasing demand for our services and growing costs, we remain committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care free of charge to patients and their loved ones. We must continue to raise over £12 million of the more than £15 million it costs to provide our services each year – that’s more than £1 million every month through donations, fundraising and retail income.
