Coming to Myton as an inpatient

All of our care is FREE of charge to our patients including meals. The Myton Hospices is a registered charity and rely on voluntary income through donations to raise the £11 million needed each year to provide our services to our patients and their families.

No, Myton is not a nursing home and we cannot take patients long term. If you come in for respite care or symptom control and decide you don’t feel able to return home, we will help you sort out longer term nursing care or assist you to get extra help and support from home.

Yes, we are a specialist clinical unit – professional nurses and doctors offer full clinical care. We prescribe and administer medication and we have some equipment that you expect to see in a hospital.

Doctors can help to control your symptoms or pain. Trained counsellors and professional therapists can assist with any emotional distress and help rebuild yours, and your carer’s energy to return home.

No, we are much more informal. You are welcome to come and go anytime during your stay and volunteers support us to deliver personally tailored services for each patient.

Most of our rooms are single, but not all. We cannot guarantee a single room, particularly for respite care. Rooms are never mixed gender and most have en-suite toilet facilities.

We provide care for anyone with an illness that cannot be cured, this includes cancer but also conditions like heart failure, motor neurone disease, kidney failure or chronic respiratory disease.

Our medical and nursing teams are trained to ensure that whatever your diagnosis you will receive the best possible care.

We have hosted weddings, a stag do, many birthdays and even a Harry Potter themed party!

Patients have had their pets visit, including a horse! We have also arranged visits home for people to say goodbye to their cattle or gardens.

Whatever you need, just ask and we will try our best to accommodate any reasonable request.

Sometimes, yes. We discuss the allocations of beds every morning and have clear criteria for prioritising patients.

You are welcome to visit anytime. However, between the hours of 2pm and 3pm and at night we have a quiet period where we ask visitors to keep the noise to a minimum and of course at night.

You are more than welcome to have an alcoholic drink and occasionally will be offered drinks prior to meals to help increase your appetite. We encourage you to bring in your favourite tipple but do like you to keep within the Government recommendation for safe daily limits of alcohol consumption.

Please bring all your medication. We also ask that you bring everything you would usually take for an overnight stay such as toiletries, tissues, shaving kit, reading books, slippers, and nightwear.

As a charity, Myton unfortunately cannot afford to provide these sundry items and we respectfully ask patients and families to bring them with them.

As with hospital visits, you may wish to leave valuable items at home.

We know for many families it is extremely important for them to continue to be your main carer. Some families wish to continue to wash, cook and feed patients, which we will always try to facilitate.

Two relatives rooms are available in Coventry and two en-suite rooms in Warwick for those whose loved one is receiving end of life care. We will try our best to accommodate family requests within the limits of our facilities’

At both Coventry and Warwick Myton Hospice the food is cooked daily in our kitchens by trained staff. There is a meal of the day each day, complemented by a menu of other options.

Patients meals and all refreshments are provided free of charge, whilst family members can order meals at reception (or from our volunteers) at a small cost.

Special dietary requirements can be catered for and tea and coffee are provided free of charge, although relatives may wish to make a donation. We also have vending machines which provide a range of sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

Patients are welcome to smoke in our specialist designated smoking room, it is however illegal for family members to smoke in Myton as it is a public place.

Please do not smoke on the patios outside patient bedrooms as it can set off the fire alarm. Smoking in patients' bedrooms is strictly prohibited.

Children of all ages are welcome. There is a family room with toys, DVDs and a computer for children to use whilst visiting, and a garden area to play.

There are also baby changing facilities.

Yes, even pets are welcome at Myton. We have had all sorts over the years, even a horse!

However, pets other than guide dogs cannot stay overnight.

Car parking is available and is free of charge at all Myton Hospice sites.

At Coventry please ask at reception for a token for the exit barrier before you leave.

Yes, you would be very welcome. Please call our reception on 01926 492 518 (Warwick) or 02476 841 900 (Coventry) and ask for the inpatient nurse in charge and we will make an appointment for your visit.

Alternatively, you could pop along to our coffee shop at our Coventry Hospice to get a feel for what Myton is all about.

Yes, you can express a preference, which we will try to accommodate based on availability. Our inpatient services are currently available in Coventry or Warwick.

Yes. We ask that both patients and carers are considerate of other guests when using their phones.

Visitors may wish to turn their phones to silent/vibrate during their stay. Myton has free WIFI and can usually provide a laptop for patients to use SKYPE and similar services, if requested.
