11-year-old Ben ran 100km in May to raise vital funds for The Myton Hospices

11-year-old Ben Fuller set himself the challenge of running 100km throughout the month of May to fundraise for The Myton Hospices – and he exceeded his fundraising target!

Ben said:

I started running earlier this year, and my mum did a similar challenge a couple of years ago for another charity. It felt like a good challenge to get into running and do something good for charity.

Ben took on the challenge with his mum, Rebecca, running an average of 3.75km a day, sometimes increasing to 5km to allow for rest days.

Ben continued:

It was quite challenging. We did a few runs before school because I have after school clubs. Getting up at 6:30 in the morning was hard sometimes, and I got a stitch on one run – that wasn’t great!

Rebecca added:

Ben also completed his first 10km, which was a big achievement! We did a few Park Runs too and really enjoyed running those together.

Ben said:

Yeah, I was pleased with the 10km – we kept a good pace!

Ben chose to support Myton in memory of his Aunty Helen, who was cared for at our Warwick Myton Hospice.

Rebecca explained:

Aunty Helen had cancer and spent some time at Myton about a year and a half ago before she died. We were able to visit her as a family. The staff made it a really welcoming place for us all – it’s a special memory.

Ben initially set a fundraising target of £100 but has raised an amazing £579!

Ben said:

It feels really good to have raised that much. Myton helped our family, and we wanted to give something back and help those in a similar situation. Thank you to everyone who donated!

Marc Dwyer, Challenge Events Lead at The Myton Hospices, said:

On behalf of everyone at The Myton Hospices, I’d like to say a big thank you to Ben, his mum Rebecca, and everyone who donated for all their wonderful support.

We are a charity, we are not the NHS, and we have to raise £12.7 million of the £15.3 million it costs this year to continue providing our services free of charge to our patients and their families. We couldn’t do it without the support of our local community. Thank you, Ben and Rebecca. You are helping us ensure Myton is ‘Here for everyone, now and forever’.
