Ekjyot was joined by her parents at their second Walk for Myton to raise vital funds for The Myton Hospices. She said:
I wanted to take part in Walk for Myton in memory of my grandad. He wasn’t cared for by Myton but community was so important to him, and us as a family, that I know he would be proud of me doing this in his honour.
It’s a great local hospice to support. I have friends and family with links to Myton and I know about all the good work they do for people in our community. The support they give to people who need it is incredible. And sadly, you never know when you might need them.
Ekjyot, being diagnosed with autism, wanted a tangible record of how much she was raising so took to her school hallways with a sponsorship form to kick-start her fundraising.
Her peers, teachers and head teacher sponsored her to walk the six-mile route at this year’s Walk for Myton. Ekjyot also asked her friends, family and neighbours for further support, and she was met with very generous donations.
Ekjyot added:
Everyone has been really supportive. I am extremely grateful to everyone from my school, neighbourhood and all my family for their help in raising a great amount for Myton. I live on a close-knit street and we all know and support each other.
There’s a variety of ages, from young families to elderly couples, who all want to do something to help. Knowing we were walking in memory of my grandad, my family pulled together and showed so much support.
With the support of everyone around her, Ekjyot raised an amazing £1,221 and is one of our top ten fundraisers for this year’s Walk for Myton!
Ekjyot commented:
I’m really proud of the amount raised, I never thought it would be that much! My mum sent me an email whilst I was at school with the JustGiving total. I screamed in my lesson so much that my teacher thought I saw a spider! I showed my head teacher and she couldn’t believe it either!
Ekjyot’s mum, Harjinder, echoed how proud she is of her daughter:
We are incredibly proud of Ekjyot. It just shows that despite her needs, she always puts others first, and seeing how her community showed their support is a testament to her kindness and selflessness.
We are a charity and this year we need to raise £11 million of the £14.3 million it costs to continue providing our services free of charge to people and their families across Coventry and Warwickshire.
We raised a record breaking £54,000 at Walk for Myton thanks to the incredible generosity of all those who supported the event, took part and everyone who sponsored them, enabling us to be there for more people living with a life-limiting illness, now and in the future. Thank you!
