Beautiful, handmade birds of all colours and sizes will be perched in Jephson Gardens for this year’s Art in the Park, thanks to a member of Myton’s staff!

When she isn’t rallying people to create the exotic birds which will feature in the art installation, Alison McKellar is the assistant manager of our Warwick Street shop in Leamington Spa. But for a few months each year Alison takes on the community outreach project for the annual Art in the Park festival which this year takes place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th August!

This year Alison has been working with a variety of groups including the GAP Centre in Warwick and the Sydni Centre to knit dozens of birds which will hang from the trees of the park for the festival. And Myton’s Warwick Street volunteers have even been getting involved with knitting birds!

Alison explained:

I thought birds would be fabulous to have in the park, in the trees. I had to create a template for people to use to knit the birds – you knit a square, fold it and stuff its head and body to create the shape. The volunteers at the shop have been knitting blackbirds – ‘four and twenty’ to be baked into a pie! It’s been a big team effort from everyone involved. Everyone gets a sense of community for contributing to the project.
