A new resource has been published which it is hoped will help commissioners and providers of palliative and end of life care to take a more proactive approach to tackling inequalities to ensure that more people in their diverse local communities receive the support they need.
Care committed to me resource...
The Myton Hospices recognises the continuing challenge of tackling inequalities in the care and support hospices offer, as highlighted by the ‘Care committed to me’ resource. It was created following research on how commissioners, service providers and health and care staff can successfully deliver high quality, personalised care to people who are not receiving the care they need, for a variety of reasons.
Organisational strategy...
Our current organisational strategy, which was published in 2015 and will be refreshed in 2020, has a strong focus on equity of access to our services. In the last four years Myton has worked to improve people’s understanding of hospice care in the hope of encouraging more members of our local community to utilise our services.
We are hoping to...
Dispel myths surrounding who can benefit from hospice care and widen both access and equity of access, the resource particularly focuses on the LGBT community, those experiencing homelessness and Gypsy and Traveller communities.
To this end, we have already introduced a Community Engagement Manager, whose role is to engage with healthcare professionals and communities to raise awareness, provide education and extend our reach.
We look forward to using the ‘Care committed to me’ resource as we map out our strategy for 2020-2025 and in continuing to improve equity of access to The Myton Hospices going forward.
We believe everyone is entitled to a good, natural death, the way they want it to be, and tackling inequalities is fundamental to achieving this for everyone with a palliative care need in Coventry and Warwickshire.
