Many of you will recognise the wonderful Charlotte from her fundraising and donation campaigns for Myton in memory of her dad, Barry.

Barry Buckley was given a two-to-eight-week prognosis with a stage 4 inoperable cancer diagnosis and was admitted to Coventry Myton Hospice.

Charlotte commented on this time, saying:

Myton was a place for him to be safe, supported and cared for in the time he had left. From the moment we arrived, I knew how special this place was going to be for us all.

The wonderful nurses and doctors kept dad as comfortable as possible, along with the fantastic complementary therapy team. The care he received, the love the nurses gave him and ultimately the respect they gave him was outstanding.

They let dad carry out every last wish he had and advocated for us as a family in every scenario. They talked to me as a human, with kindness and compassion, and left no questions unanswered.

Charlotte has vowed to keep her beloved dad, Barry’s memory alive with her fundraising efforts. Charlotte raised an amazing £1,050 to support the improvements of Coventry Myton Hospice’s Relatives Accommodation, providing the rooms with mattress toppers, extra pillows, duvet sets and even self-care packages, like shampoo and body wash, to help those staying in the flats.

To add to that, Charlotte and her friend Emma pulled together Christmas and Valentines Care Packages for each of the 19 Inpatient rooms at Coventry Myton Hospice. These care packages included goodies for each occasion, encouraging the families receiving them to reflect on their love and share good memories.

Charlotte said:

Based on my own experience, I know those flats provide a little bit of normality for the families going through end of life and the rooms ensure loved ones can get some rest.

Paying kindness forward is also extra special at these times of the year. A lot of people associate hospices with great sadness, but I for one know that with great sadness there is also a beautiful sense of happiness.

Knowing I am being a small part of that happiness for others and keeping the connection with my dad as strong as ever, in his loving memory, is something I am really proud of.

Now, Charlotte is quite literally taking on a mountain of a challenge, having signed up to not one but both of our Sunrise Challenges; Scafell Pike and Snowdon. On Sunday 2nd June and Sunday 15th September respectively, Charlotte will climb two of the highest peaks in the UK in memory of her dad and to raise vital funds for Myton.

Charlotte commented:

When I was young, my dad participated in the Trek to the Home of the Dalai Llama and then went on to complete the Inca Trail Trek in Peru. Both were gruelling challenges which raised over £10,000 for Breast Cancer Care, in support of my mum who battled this disease. I was so proud of him.

Now I’m walking in his shoes. Witnessing the breath-taking views from the peaks of the mountains and the spectacular landscapes below as the day grows lighter will be something I can cherish forever, and knowing I will be raising money to help support Myton care for patients and their families will be hugely rewarding.

Charlotte will be using Barry’s rucksack along with his desert scarf for both challenges, as well as carrying a photo of him up the mountains.

I will raise his photo up to the heavens when I reach the summit for both walks. It will be emotional, and challenging mentally and physically, but nothing will compare to the bravery my dad showed me in his battle with cancer last year.

Charlotte has set her overall target as £1,100 in memory of her dad.

This is for you dad, and for all of those that will need the care and compassion of the beautiful Myton heroes in the future.

We think Charlotte is truly amazing and can’t thank her enough for all she has done and continues to do for Myton, our patients and their families. Thank you!
