Since 2015, the nursery, based on the grounds of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW), has dedicated a full week to their annual Welly Walk, ensuring each child gets the chance to take part in Welly-related activities.
Claire Shaw, Centre Director at Busy Bees at UHCW, said:
Our amazing staff plan fun activities based on the children’s current interests – all whilst they wear their wellies! In the past, we’ve had water trays for splashing, footprint painting to create artwork, and even sensory walks through cornflour and water.
The children love getting involved. Play is essential for their development, boosting imagination, creativity, physical health, and communication skills, while also encouraging independence and critical thinking. And, of course, they’re raising money for such an important cause.
The support from parents is incredible; they love seeing their children have fun at the same time as contributing to a vital community resource.
Alongside the Welly Walks, the nursery also donates food from their Harvest Festival for Myton to use to make hampers for fundraising events.
Claire explained why supporting Myton is so important to them:
A lot of our parents work at the hospital and at Myton, so they see first-hand the incredible work they do. The first year we held a Welly Walk, one of our staff members’ mother-in-law was being cared for at Coventry Myton Hospice. The support she received was amazing. When we first announced the fundraiser to parents, we heard so many stories of how Myton had helped their families which made our decision easy.
Being on the hospital grounds, right next to Myton, means fundraising for them is a way for us to be part of the community. There are so many charities to support, but for us, this one is close to home.
Claire McDowell, Coventry Fundraising and Front of House Lead at Myton, added:
We are incredibly grateful to Claire and the entire team at Busy Bees, and to the children and their parents, for their continued support. It’s great to see the children having so much fun whilst making a difference. This year, we need to raise £12.7 million of the £15.3 million it costs to continue providing our services free of charge to people living with life-limiting illnesses, and their families, across Coventry and Warwickshire.
Is your nursery or pre-school interested in taking part in our sponsored Welly Walk or any of our other fundraisers?
