The Myton Hospices is being featured in a special podcast episode that shines a light on what hospice care really means, and why it’s about so much more than people often realise.

The episode of the ‘Wild Card – Whose Shoes?’ podcast has been created as part of Podcasthon, a global initiative that sees thousands of podcasts dedicate one episode each year to a charity close to their hearts. The aim is to raise awareness, spark conversation and celebrate the organisations making a difference in communities around the world.

Podcast host Gill Phillips decided to support The Myton Hospices for this year’s Podcasthon. Gill’s mum was cared for at our Warwick Myton Hospice before she died in 2017, an experience that helped shape Gill’s understanding of what compassionate, person-centred hospice care truly looks like. In a fitting tribute to her mum, and Myton, Gill released the podcast on Mother’s Day.

The episode brings together voices from across the hospice, sharing real insight into the many different ways Myton supports patients and families.

Olivia Bowskill, our Community Engagement Manager and registered nurse, talks about how hospice care can start much earlier than many people expect, helping people live well for as long as possible.

Julie Cooke, Senior Staff Nurse at Warwick Myton Hospice, shares what compassionate care looks like day-to-day and how small moments can mean everything to patients and families.

Kay Rhodes, a Telephone Support Volunteer and volunteer Receptionist, describes the vital role volunteers play – often being the first friendly voice someone hears when they reach out for support.

The conversation also explores the wider community that makes hospice care possible. Anil Gupta, Head of Retail, explains how Myton’s network of charity shops play a vital role in funding care, while Holly Kerrigan, Director of Marketing and Communications, reflects on the importance of raising awareness so that more families know support is available when they need it.

Throughout the episode, stories highlight how hospice care focuses on the whole person, not just their medical needs. From late-night conversations and moments of laughter to special experiences such as Prosecco parties, beach days and even a virtual visit to the Grand Canyon, the episode captures the creativity, compassion and humanity that defines hospice care.

It also shines a light on the many ways people across the community contribute to Myton’s work, whether by volunteering their time, donating items to shops, supporting fundraising events or leaving a gift in their will. Together, these acts of generosity help ensure that we can continue providing vital, specialist care, free of charge for patients and families across Coventry and Warwickshire.

Gill Phillips, host of the podcast, said:

The care my mum received from The Myton Hospices was extraordinary. It was compassionate, thoughtful and deeply human. Recording this podcast episode with members of the Myton team felt like a small way to say thank you - and to help more people understand the incredible difference hospice care makes to families.

Holly Kerrigan, Director of Marketing and Communications at The Myton Hospices, added:

We’re incredibly grateful to Gill for choosing to feature Myton and for sharing her own personal story. There are lots of misconceptions about hospice care, with many people thinking it’s only about the final days of life.

In reality, our teams support patients and families much earlier in their illness, helping people live well for as long as possible. Exposure like this helps open up those conversations and remind people that hospice care is truly about living well, not just dying well.

The episode reflects the importance of compassionate care, family and community. By sharing these stories, the podcast helps more people understand what hospice care really looks like, and how every one of us can play a part in ensuring this vital community asset is here for everyone, now and forever.
