Introducing Cherlisa – one of many superstar volunteers at The Myton Hospices!

This Volunteers Week, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to every one of our volunteers. Your commitment helps us deliver compassionate care to people and their loved ones living with life-limiting illnesses, and we truly appreciate the time you give.

Whether you volunteer in our hospices, charity shops, community projects, or fundraising events, your efforts make a real difference. Cherlisa’s role in our shops is a shining example of how volunteers help raise vital funds to enable us to support families across Coventry and Warwickshire.

Cherlisa volunteers at our Radford shop in Coventry, supporting the shop manager with all aspects of the day-to-day running of the store.

Cherlisa said:

I get involved with everything. I stock the shelves, sort through donations, serve on the till, and make sure customers feel welcome and comfortable.

I enjoy every single part of it – meeting new people and working with the donations they bring in. It's lovely to see people light up when they find something they love. The interactions are amazing, and no two days are the same.

Having moved to the area to care for a loved one, Cherlisa was looking for something that offered variety, and found it through volunteering.

She added:

It’s such a varied role, and I’ve loved learning the ropes. Being a carer can be quite repetitive day to day, so having something where I can do lots of different tasks in one shift is great. It’s helping me grow as a person and has really changed how I see things.

Volunteering has also helped her build valuable life and work skills.

I wanted to gain experience in different areas, especially customer service. In any walk of life, you need to be able to communicate and deal with people, and volunteering here is really helping me develop those skills.

It’s the transferable experience that makes a real difference – you’re exposed to things you might never come across otherwise. I enjoy the challenges and the responsibility it brings.

Wini Falcnor, Radford Shop Manager, said:

Our shop volunteers are absolutely crucial – we simply couldn’t run as smoothly without them – and Cherlisa is no different. When I know Cherlisa is coming in to volunteer, it’s fabulous. She’s such an all-rounder who has really lightened the load. She is a blessing!

As someone with first-hand experience of caring, the mission of Myton is close to Cherlisa’s heart.

I know just how vital the care and support that places like Myton provide. Knowing I’m playing even a small part in helping them continue their work is so worthwhile.

And for anyone thinking about volunteering, Cherlisa has a clear message:

Volunteering is one of the most important things you can do – if you’re able to, you absolutely should. Stepping outside your usual routine to do something that benefits others, while also helping you grow, is incredibly rewarding.

If you’re inspired by Cherlisa’s story and love connecting with people while supporting a great local cause, why not join our retail volunteer team? Your support in our shops could help raise vital funds that directly impact our patients and their families.
