Hospice Care Week is a chance to celebrate and champion the vital work of hospices across the UK, and to show just how much of a difference compassionate care can make for patients and their families.
This year’s theme, ‘hospice care is more than you think’, gives us the perfect opportunity to shine a light on the breadth of support we offer here at The Myton Hospices, alongside the incredible work of other hospices nationwide.
It’s a common misconception that hospices are only there for people in their very last days. Whilst end of life care is an important part of what we do, our services reach far beyond that. From the moment someone receives a terminal diagnosis, we’re here to help them live well – offering wellbeing support, counselling, physiotherapy, pain management and so much more.
Throughout this week, we’ll be sharing stories that reveal the many ways we help people make memories, find comfort, and make the most of the time they have. Today, we’re starting with some of the heart-warming moments we’ve been privileged to share with our patients – stories that truly show the full scope of hospice care.
Roy’s Day with a Digger

When Roy Ward, an enthusiastic farmer, came to our Warwick Myton Hospice just before Christmas 2023, our team quickly learned about his passion for farming machinery. Activities Coordinator Calley, together with our brilliant nurses, arranged a surprise that brought a little piece of the farm to Roy – a visit from a Bobcat E19 digger, affectionately named Darcy, kindly brought along by Dave at CV Hire Centre Ltd.
Roy couldn’t stop smiling as he watched the digger in action, asking questions and enjoying every second. Roy shared:
It was such a nice surprise! The digger was great, and it was worth being out in the cold to get outside
Rosalie and the Penguins

At Warwick Myton Hospice, patient Rosalie had an unforgettable day thanks to the return of two very special visitors – Pringle and Widget, the penguins who stole everyone’s hearts on their first visit in 2022. With help from Calley, and Rosalie’s family, the penguins made another joyful appearance, giving patients and loved ones a chance to share a truly extraordinary experience.
Rosalie said:
I’ve had a lovely time at Myton, the people are amazing! It was fabulous holding them and interacting with them. It was wonderful to share this with my family.
Jacqui and the Alpacas

At Coventry Myton Hospice, Jacqui, who recently celebrated her wedding at the hospice, was treated to an extra-special visit from her favourite animals. With a little help from The Alpaca Pals, our nurses organised a surprise visit from Dante and Caygan, two friendly alpacas who quickly captured everyone’s hearts.
Jacqui shared:
The care has been beyond belief. The team is always there for a chat; they have been tremendous.
At Myton, we are here for everyone, helping people and their families make the most of every moment, creating memories to cherish for a lifetime.
