Hospice Care Week is a chance to celebrate and raise awareness of hospice care locally and nationwide, recognising the incredible work being done to make sure everyone who needs to can benefit from the very best palliative and end of life care.
Taking place from 7th-13th October, this year’s theme is centred around hospice retail and the role it plays in funding hospice services. Across the UK, hospice-run retail operations contribute more to the funding of hospice services than the state.
Here at The Myton Hospices, it is no different. We are a charity, not the NHS, and just 20% of our costs are covered by statutory funding. With annual costs running at an all-time high of £14.3 million, we are relying on voluntary support of £11 million this year alone to continue providing our existing services free of charge to our patients and their loved ones.
Our charity shops play a crucial role in reaching this target; funding the care of 1 in 4 of our patients. By shopping or volunteering at, and donating to, one of our 25 shops, you are helping to ensure we can support people in Coventry and Warwickshire living with life limiting illnesses, and their families.
In celebration of Hospice Care Week, we visited our trio of stores in Rugby to highlight the impact shopping at your local charity shop can have on the community. Keep an eye out on our social media channels this week @MytonHospices to see what you can get your hands on at our shops and how supporting our shops can help ensure more people can access a Hospice Bed at The Myton Hospices.
Like many hospices around the UK, we are facing huge funding challenges against a backdrop of increased demand for services and a stretched NHS. We have recently launched our Urgent Appeal to raise £240,000, to ensure more people in Coventry and Warwickshire can access a Hospice Bed when they need to.
More people need a Hospice Bed now than ever before, demand for our Inpatient Units has increased by 11% in the last 12 months and too many people on the waiting list for a Hospice Bed at Myton will die before they can access one.
As the only provider of Hospice Inpatient Beds in Coventry and Warwickshire, we are acutely aware of the need for more, but we are limited in what we can provide due to funding constraints.
It is this urgent and heart-breaking situation that we are aiming to tackle with our new appeal and we need your support.

Your support, whether through donations, shopping or volunteering at our shops, or spreading awareness of our cause, makes a huge difference.
Thank you!
