Meet Tom, our Health and Safety Manager, this World Day for Safety and Health at Work

Today we are celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work, an international campaign promoting safe, healthy and decent work around the globe.

What better way to celebrate than to introduce you to our Health and Safety Manager, Tom Marston!

Name and job title

Tom Marston – Health, Safety & Wellbeing Manager

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Charismatic, funny and kind-hearted

How did you come to work at Myton?

I was told about the role through someone I used to work with at my last job who also works at Myton! Sally suggested I apply, which I did and here I am!

Being raised in Warwick, I have always known about the fantastic work Myton do, so it was a great opportunity for me too.

If you had to describe Myton in three words, what would they be?

Compassionate, friendly and amazing!!!

What does your role entail?

Essentially, preventing accidents in the workplaces which could lead to injury or ill health.

I design and implement safety measures as well as complying with UK legislation.

I also lead staff & volunteer wellbeing, with a purpose of supporting everyone’s wellbeing and hopefully helping make sure people go home happy!

What is one thing about health and safety in the workplace that you wish everyone knew?

Its everyone’s responsibility too!

36.8 million days a year are lost due to work-related illness and injuries and currently over 1.8 million people are suffering from work-related illnesses such as stress, anxiety, musculoskeletal disorders.

If we all start to look after one another, people will be happier!

Why is it important to consider health and safety in the workplace?

Without all our staff and volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to do the fantastic things we do for our patients, families and the community.

If our staff go off work due to accidents, ill health, stress etc, it would impact what we do here at Myton!

Looking after ourselves and others is so important.

What project are you working on right now that you’re really excited about?

As you can imagine, my version of what’s exciting in the health and safety world would be very different to what people define exciting as!

But I am excited about all the wellbeing projects we have lined up! And really hope it does start to make a difference on everyone’s general wellbeing.

What is a skill you’d like to learn and why?

Not really a skill, but I would love to have a working understanding of astrophysics.

Everything to do with space is so interesting. So to literally understand the science behind string theory, time/space, black holes, neutron stars etc would be amazing.

If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would you pick and why?

If he could speak English, then Ramesses II. He was considered the greatest Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt (And also the brother of Moses).

First and foremost, I want to know how the Pyramids were built exactly! Then to just tell me all about the culture would be so fascinating. (Maybe see if he has some rare gold for me too)

What would be on the menu?

Something unhealthy. Probably fried chicken!!

If you could travel to any event past, present or future, what would it be and why?

As much as I find some past events so interesting….I think I would travel 1 million years into the future.

I find nature and evolution fascinating, even if humans were no longer around, I want to see what type of animals would exist after a million years of evolution.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Most people will already know, but I go to watch the mighty sky blues play. I go to all the home games and most away matches! PUSB. CCFC.

I do also enjoy a good hike up a mountain or in the countryside. If not, I am probably at home watching a good tv series.

What is your favourite book or film?

I couldn’t pick a favourite movie, too many to choose from! But my favourite movie franchise…..Star Wars, this is the way.

Anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?

I may be a little disappointed in a few weeks if Coventry don’t get promoted through play-offs to the premier league.
