Team rally together to raise money in memory of colleague

Pete Bishop was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and was admitted to The Myton Hospice’s Inpatient Unit at Warwick Myton Hospice in April.

Pete spent the last two weeks of his life there and sadly died on 3rd May 2023 aged just 46.

Prior to his diagnosis Pete was very active and last year, he completed a two-day paddleboard adventure taking him an impressive 40-mile route along the river from Stratford Upon Avon to Tewkesbury.

Rob, one of Pete’s colleagues at Jaguar Land Rover, said:

One day, Pete woke up and decided to paddleboard across the Avon. He told his wife, packed some food, and headed to Tewkesbury. Out of the blue and with no planning, he was off!

Rob and other colleagues were inspired by Pete’s adventurous spirit and decided to take on the same challenge in aid of Myton.

Rob continued:

As a team of 20, we wanted to honour Pete and complete something he had done.

The Paddleboard Challenge was an obvious choice. Pete had completed it over two days so we thought we’d do the same.

It was really hard work! We paddled our hearts out, navigating four paddleboards, a selection of single kayaks and three or four Canadian canoes – those were the hardest!

We did have two trusty motorboats on hand for those who needed an extra bit of help along the way!

Through their dedication and determination, this incredible team at Jaguar Land Rover raised an amazing £7,967 in memory of Pete for Myton!

Though their fundraising didn’t go without a few humorous mishaps or emotional moments.

Rob added:

We all had a good chuckle when Jack and I decided to head down a weir and we fell out of our boat.

Thankfully we had people on hand to help us in these situations otherwise we would’ve had to swim the rest of the journey!

It was lovely to do this as a team, with one common goal and person in mind.

We all got rather emotional when we made it to Tewkesbury. We were surrounded by family, friends, and Pete’s parents, which meant a lot to us all.

We’d like to say a big thank you to Rob and the rest of the Jaguar Land Rover team for their amazing support!

Rob said:

I visited Pete when he was at Myton and the place is just incredible.

They looked after everyone amazingly well, even the visitors, and they were great with Pete.

We can’t thank them enough for the care they provided Pete and his loved ones.

We need to raise £10.5 million this year to continue to provide our services free of charge to people in Coventry and Warwickshire – and we can’t do this without the incredible support from amazing teams like those from Jaguar Land Rover!
