Last year, Richard took part in our May Skydive to raise vital funds for The Myton Hospices in memory of his mum, Sandra. This year, he is taking his fundraising to new heights by conquering a Wing Walk.

Having worked as an Outdoor Activities Instructor in a previous career and a self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie, Richard is ticking off his bucket list whilst fundraising for a charity close to his heart.

Richard said:

The skydive was amazing! I was nervous of the unknown at first but the adrenaline was so surreal. If anything, I felt more nauseous when the parachute opened than when I was free falling!

Working at a Tesco Express in Warwick, Richard fundraised at his workplace. After his skydive, customers were repeatedly asking what he was going to do next. One customer even came up with the idea of a wing walk.

Richard continued:

When the customers brought up the idea of a wing walk, I thought it was the perfect thing to do next. I felt like I had to go bigger and better than a skydive and this was the perfect suggestion!

Though I am taking it one step further. I will be doing an aerobic wing walk, meaning the plane will do barrel roles and loop-the-loops. I know I have to do something even crazier to ensure I can still raise a great amount for Myton.

The countdown to the wing walk is on, with a date set of Friday 4th October. Richard needs to raise £1,600 by the end of August to cover the cost of the wing walk and raise vital funds for Myton, and he is already off to a flying start!

Thanks to the generosity of his customers and other Tesco stores and pubs in the local area, Richard has already raised over £450 through buckets collections.

Richard added:

The support has been amazing, I am so overwhelmed by it all! My customers are locals, so it’s like we know one another. Even with the other Tesco stores and pubs joining in on the fundraising on my behalf is incredible.

Everyone knows I am taking on these crazy challenges in memory of my mum and to have their unwavering support means everything to me and my family.

Richard’s mum, Sandra, was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in 2018 and was given a prognosis of 12 months. When she sadly started to deteriorate, the family were caring for Sandra when they realised they needed outside help to assist with the care.

The family always had Myton at the back of their minds throughout their mum’s journey and were relieved when our Myton at Home nurses started to care for her.

Lorraine, Richard’s sister, said:

The staff were angels, they took the pressure off, not just caring mum, but us as well. After caring for mum throughout her journey, they made it possible for us to be a family again. As soon as they arrived, we could spend quality time with her, instead of being her carer.

I think the most important part was they made her feel human and normal again. They asked me what mum would like to do, I suggested getting her hair done. They came in and really pampered her!

Sandra was admitted to our Warwick Myton Hospice a week later.

Lorraine added:

She was transported from her home to Warwick Myton Hospice and was clearly in pain, but when she arrived at Myton and knew where she was, she smiled.

They would always go the extra mile for her. They always left her feeling amazing. They even put perfume on her, which is something so small but made such a difference! It’s things like that which you would never get in hospital.

Sandra was at Warwick Myton Hospice for 5 days before she died in May 2019 aged 65.

As a family, we can’t thank the nurses at Myton enough for everything they did for mum and us. That’s why I am taking part in these crazy activities, to give back for what they gave us during mum’s last few weeks.
