Senior Staff Nurse, Andy Houghton gets in the ring for Myton

After a 14 hour shift, most people would pop their feet up for the rest of the evening, but not Andy Houghton. The Senior Staff Nurse has spent most of his evenings training for not just one but two local charity events.

On Sunday 18th September, Andy will join over 300 rowers for this year’s Dragon Boat Race at Warwick Boat Centre. The Dragon Boat Race will see 24 teams of 16 rowers race against one another down the River Avon. Organised by Warwick Avon Rotary Club, the fundraiser aims to raise money for Myton and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

On Friday 16th September, Andy will also be representing Myton at Brave Hearts White Collar Boxing’s fundraiser at Sports Connexion. The boxing match has been organised in aid of Zoe’s Place but organisers have kindly agreed to let Andy compete for Myton.

Andy said, ‘Last year’s Dragon Boat Race was a really enjoyable day for both those who took part and those who came to cheer them on. I am really looking forward to this year’s event, especially because it is set to be even bigger than last year.
I wanted to take part in the charity boxing match because I know that other fighters were willing to train to compete and I felt inspired to do the same. My training has involved running five times a week, weight and strength conditioning four times a week and sparring at Bell Green boxing club. I have a boxing trainer whose mum sadly died at Myton several years ago and he has really supported me throughout my training.
All of our care at Myton is provided free of charge and we need to raise over £8 million each year to continue providing these services. As a Senior Nurse on the Inpatient Unit, I have witnessed first-hand how much of a difference donations can make and I wanted to do my part to raise money for the hospice.’
