Dr Nicky Baker, Speciality Doctor at Myton, and Emma Charles, Myton’s Clinical Education Lead, were delighted to be invited to attend the ‘Research Matters – Creating Impact, Changing Lives’ event at the Centre for Care Excellence.
Working in partnership with Emma Murphy, Associate Professor in Nephrology Nursing, and renal colleagues from University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW), Dr Baker co-delivered a powerful presentation titled ‘Impact Beyond Boundaries: Transforming Care Together’.
Through the sharing of a real patient story, the session highlighted the true value of collaborative working between hospice and renal teams, ensuring that care remains centred around what matters most to each individual. In this case, that meant supporting a patient to make the decision to withdraw from dialysis, and enabling them to spend their final days peacefully at Myton, surrounded by their loved ones.
Reflecting on the experience, Dr Baker said:
It was incredibly meaningful to share how partnership working can transform the experience of care at the most difficult time in someone’s life. When teams come together with a shared focus on what truly matters to the patient, we can create space for choice, dignity and compassion, ensuring people are supported to live well until the end.
The event also showcased the impact of the recent QELCA® training programme Myton staff delivered to renal teams across Coventry and Warwickshire. Posters highlighting the teams’ quality improvement projects formed part of the Pathway to Research Excellence exhibition, demonstrating how shared learning and collaboration are strengthening patient-centred care across services.
This reflects Myton’s ongoing commitment to working alongside partners to influence care beyond hospice walls, in the community, helping more people with palliative and end of life care needs, receive the right support, in the right place and at the right time.
