Sofia Hancock Work Experience Blog

I decided to do my work experience at The Myton Hospices due to my interest in the marketing/business sector, Holly and the rest of the lovely marketing department welcomed me in and ensured I was fully involved, they went out of their way to include me in projects, set me tasks to expand my skill set as well as supporting me throughout.

Everyone in The Myton Hospice’s community was so friendly and considerate and supported me throughout my week. There was a lovely atmosphere in all departments and an organisation I would recommend to anyone looking to volunteer or for work experience themselves.

Day one

On my first day I supported the marketing team at Coventry Myton Hospice whilst they took photos of nurse practitioners for an upcoming leaflet regarding their job role in order to raise awareness.

They also asked a few patients if they would like to be involved with the photographs which they accepted with enthusiasm, it was lovely to see how thankful they were and willing to help Myton.

After this, I worked on Canva to create an Instagram post to promote their golf day event, this was a great way to try out a new editing tool and practice using it in a professional way.

Day two

On my second day I was at Warwick Myton Hospice where I met more of the marketing team, at the start of the day I joined a meeting regarding a recent abseil event where they discussed the outcomes and details of the event which was really interesting to see where they thought areas could be improved to make sure next time the event runs even more smoothly.

After this I helped create a display board to be used at the Coventry Summer Fayre to advertise the new upcoming events. To finish off my day there was two more marketing/comms meeting where they discussed the launch of the next event as well as the longer-term plans for the next few months.

It was really interesting to sit in these meetings to get an idea of how long it really takes to launch an event as well as the time and planning that goes into it.

Day three

On my last day, I supported Holly whilst she arranged the filming of a new campaign Myton are soon to launch, there was an external filming crew to interview the CEO on her thoughts on Myton’s upcoming events, it was so interesting to see the BTS of the campaign and amazing to be involved.

Shortly after this, Holly and I attended a marketing meeting at St Giles, another local hospice where the marketing teams met to discuss their plans and support each other with problems they may have faced, for example Crisis Comms was the overall topic.

I particularly enjoyed this as there was a friendly and supportive atmosphere between all the hospices and genuine support for one another.  To finish we got a tour of the lovely hospice and a sneak peek of their upcoming march the elephants project.

Overall

Overall Myton was a wonderful place to do work experience, everyone was so welcoming and made me feel included all the time whilst keeping me fully involved with new tasks.

I got a good idea of what it’s like to work as part of a marketing team which has been helpful when thinking about my further education pathways.

Thank you to Holly and the rest of the wonderful Myton team for having me!
