Will is taking on our Coventry Cathedral Abseil next weekend to raise vital funds for The Myton Hospices. He said:

It’s my birthday the following day so I wanted to do something different to celebrate. I’ve done a few things for charity before, raising money for defibrillators in my area, and being a Freemason this is a big part of what we do, but I wanted to do something a little bit different to celebrate my birthday.

Will’s reason for supporting Myton is very personal:

My aunt died at the age of 35 with skin cancer. Her granddaughter, my second cousin Chantelle, died at the age of 19 and as a family, we all raised money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. It was such a horrific experience but knowing we gave something back has really helped. Whilst Myton wasn’t involved in the care of either of them, I know the work they do with people in similar situations is incredible. It’s something I could never do – I’d rather climb down a building – so by raising money for them, that’s my way of contributing.

Will will be descending down Coventry Cathedral in a Spiderman Venom costume. He added:

Venom as a character uses human hosts in order to survive. In a way, this is similar to cancer, and with my personal experiences, I wanted to do something that has similar connotations to what we’ve been through.

Will is a keen climber and enjoys sports climbing in his free time, but abseiling is a new challenge he’s excited to try:

Heights have always been okay with me – I go climbing and work in roofing so I’m used to being up high! However, I’ve never really abseiled before, so I’m really looking forward to the challenge. The cathedral is so beautiful, and what better place to do this! My wife and I got married just opposite, so we have some wedding photos with it in the background – it will be such a lovely day.

So far, Will has raised an incredible £695!

We’d like to send a huge thank you and the very best of luck to everyone taking on our Coventry Cathedral Abseil next weekend!

Thanks to the amazing generosity of our participants, and all those cheering them on, we can continue providing our services free of charge to people living with life-limiting illnesses.

This year it will cost £15.3 million to keep our care available, and with only 17% of our funding coming from the NHS, we rely on incredible supporters like Will to help raise the remaining £12.7 million.
