FAQs...
Q – How much sponsorship do I need to raise?
A – Your £20 registration fee covers the cost of the event, but we rely on your sponsorship to help us reach our target and continue providing our vital care.
We ask each participant to raise a minimum of £200, helping us work towards our £60,000 goal.
To take part, 80% of your minimum sponsorship or donation in lieu (£160) must be raised by 27th August – one month before the event. The full amount must be pledged before 27th September to secure your place.
Q - What time is the event?
You can choose to set off in the morning or afternoon from 9:30am - 4:30pm, we will do our best to accommodate your preference, but get in quick to choose your preferred time as each slow only has a limited amount of places.
Q – How tall is the Cathedral?
A – 90ft tall!
Q – What is the minimum age for participants?
A – You must be at least 16 years old to take part.
Anyone under 18 will need a parent or guardian with them on the day to sign an Indemnity Form before they can abseil.
Q – What is the maximum age for participants?
A – There is no maximum age limit – if you believe you are fit enough, you’re welcome to take part!
Abseiling is both physically and mentally challenging, so if you have any concerns about your health or ability, we recommend speaking to your doctor before signing up.
Q - Can people with disabilities take part in the event?
A - Abseil Events UK (AEUK)/Eight Point Two (8.2) is very keen to provide the opportunity for anyone with a disability with the opportunity to take part in its events.
Please note that the provision of abseiling for people with disabilities can be a very specialist area, requiring additional technical equipment and knowledge as well as taking a great deal more time and instructors.
Please contact us ASAP if you would like to discuss this further by emailing events@mytonhospice.org
Q – What should I wear for my abseil?
A – Comfortable, sporty clothing is ideal. We recommend:
✔ Lace-up trainers for good grip✔ Jogging or training trousers for ease of movement✔ A long-sleeved t-shirt to help protect against grazes
Avoid loose clothing, scarves, jewellery, rings, and hooped earrings, as these can be a safety risk. Bring extra layers and a lightweight jacket – we can’t guarantee the weather, and it can feel much colder at height.
Q - Can people participate whilst in fancy dress?
A - Most costumes are fine, and the harness, helmet, etc. can be fitted over them. However, we reserve the right to not allow someone in fancy dress if we think the costume will compromise the safety of the participant. Please bring your costume on the day, but also bring a change of clothes.
If possible, please email events@mytonhospice.org in advance to let us know the type of costume you will be wearing so we can check with 8point2 for its suitability.
Q - What is the maximum weight for participants?
A – 17 stone (108kg) for abseils. Larger people need to be fitted with a chest harness in addition to the waist harness. At some sites, participants may need to climb over a fence or rail to get to the abseil; therefore they must have ease of movement in order to do this.
Q - What is the minimum weight for participants?
A - 6 stone (38kg) for abseils. AEUK/8.2 reserve the right to prevent someone from doing an event if they are too light, and the weather is inclement, i.e. windy. Lighter people can get blown around more. This is not a frequent occurrence.
Q - Can someone participate if they’ve recently had an operation / injury?
A - If AEUK/8.2 have any concerns about a person’s health then we will request that the person seeks their doctors’ approval. Ask them to explain that the harness will go around their hips and waist, and all their weight will be held by this harness…participants usually know themselves whether this will feel too uncomfortable for them.
Q - Is the equipment safe?
A – From AEUK/8.2: “All of our equipment, especially ropes, are stored, maintained and replaced, as for the standard practice recommended by the manufacturers. All equipment is checked frequently and retired if there is any damage to any part. The equipment we use has an unspecified working life, and in his role as a technical advisor, Ian Loombe is qualified to make any inspections needed.”
Q - Does 8.2 use qualified instructors?
A - 8.2 only employ qualified staff when used in instructor roles, and we are governed by the MLTE (Mountain Leader Training Board- England) and the BMC (British Mountaineering Council). Ian Loombe is a member of AMI (Association of Mountaineering Instructors). Please look at www.mltb.org and www.aala.org.uk for more information. All of our instructors are First Aid qualified; they must be, in order to maintain their instructor qualifications.
Q - How will the event run?
A - There are 5 basic stages to the event, but these are location dependant:
Supporters check-in. Supporters are brought in groups of 5 to the kitting-up area by the Myton team.15 minutes before their time slot arrives, the participant is kitted-up by an AEUK/8.2 instructor & brought to the abseil station in groups.Supporters abseils at the time specified. At abseils a member of the charity should meet participants at the bottom & help maintain a “safe area” at the bottom of the abseil.Supporters returns to registration desk with kit which is brought back to AEUK/8.2 staff with the next group.
Q - What happens if I don’t raise the £200 minimum sponsorship?
A - We will aim to support you as much as possible in the lead up to the event to ensure you smash your £200 target amount.
We ask for people to raise this figure to cover our event costs and also to help us achieve our £60,000 target. As this is a minimum sponsorship event we will be asking people who have not raised this amount before the event itself to make a donation to Myton which would make up the total amount (ie if you have raised £150 we would appreciate you making a £50 donation on the day to cover this cost).
To take part, 80% of your minimum sponsorship or donation in lieu (£160) must be raised by 27th August – one month before the event. The full amount must be pledged before 27th September to secure your place.
We do appreciate that circumstances can be difficult so if you are having problems with your fundraising or have any concerns at any point please get in touch via events@mytonhospice.org

The money you raise means we can make the most difficult times that little bit more manageable, and care for more people like Margaret and her family…
Margaret Lowndes was admitted to our Warwick Myton Hospice in April 2024, after she was diagnosed with cancer. Her daughter, Alison, commented:
Mum had spent the previous two Christmases in hospital, firstly recovering from surgery following the discovery of a shadow on her lung, and then again after she was diagnosed with cancer. At this time, they couldn’t get her medication right so she was very unwell and uncomfortable. As her tumour was underneath her right armpit, it bled often and needed constant attention. After a catastrophic bleed, I knew we needed further intervention.
After some discussions with Margaret’s GP and the district nursing team, Margaret got a bed at our Warwick Myton Hospice Inpatient Unit. Alison commented:
Having a bed available at Myton was such a big relief. I’m not medically trained but was becoming her carer and ultimately, I knew we wouldn’t have long left with mum so I wanted to become her daughter again, and Myton gave me that.
Margaret died on 7th May 2024 after three weeks at Myton. Alison continued:
The nursing staff are all angels. Everything felt natural and organic, and nothing was too much trouble. The family all came to see her, even our dog, Teddi, who was her little companion. We had free run of everything which made us as comfortable as mum was.
We were given the keys to the relative’s accommodation, which we didn’t think we needed at first, but after entering the flat and having a few moments away to take a shower, we realised just how much the nursing and medical team had our best interests as well as Mum’s at heart, it meant more than we realised.
Every family deserves the chance for their loved ones to be supported in a peaceful and calm environment like Myton, dying with dignity and control. During a very emotional time, they took over, wrapped their arms around us and supported us till the very end.
You can have all the money in the world but Myton’s support is priceless and should be available to anyone who needs it, and we will continue to support them so other families can have what mum had.
With your sponsorship and fundraising, we can help more people like Margaret and Alison when they need us most, now and in the future.
