  • FAQs...

Q – How much sponsorship do I need to raise?

A – Your £20 registration fee covers the cost of the event, but we rely on your sponsorship to help us reach our target and continue providing our vital care.

We ask each participant to raise a minimum of £200 in sponsorship, helping us towards our £85,000 goal.

To take part, 80% of your minimum sponsorship or donation in lieu (£160) must be raised by 11th June 2026. The full amount must be raised by the date of your Coventry Cathedral Abseil.

Q - What time is the event?

A – You can choose to take part in the morning or afternoon, between 9.30am and 4.30pm. We will do our best to accommodate your preferred time, but please book early as each time slot has a limited number of places.

You will be allocated a specific time slot closer to the event.

Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your allocated time so we can check you in, kit you out and brief you before your abseil.

    Example schedule:

If you select the 9.30am – 10am time slot, your schedule on the day will be:

    • 9.00am – Arrive for registration and T-shirt collection

    • 9.30am – Briefing and equipment fitting

    • Between 9.30am – 10am – You will complete your Coventry Cathedral abseil

Please note, we aim to keep to this schedule. However, as this is a live event, it may be subject to change on the day.

Q – How tall is the Cathedral?

    A – 90ft tall!

Q – What is the minimum age for participants?

A – You must be at least 16 years old to take part, however...

If you are under 16 but have previous abseiling or climbing experience, we may consider your application on an individual basis. Please contact events@mytonhospice.org to discuss this further.

Anyone under 18 will need a parent or guardian with them on the day to sign a consent form before they can abseil.

Q – What is the maximum age for participants?

A – There is no maximum age limit – if you believe you are fit enough, you’re welcome to take part!

Abseiling is both physically and mentally challenging, so if you have any concerns about your health or ability, we recommend speaking to your doctor before signing up.

Q - Can people with disabilities take part in the event?

A - We are committed to making our events as accessible and inclusive as possible. We welcome participants with disabilities and will always do our best to explore how we can support you to take part safely.

Please be aware that abseiling can be a highly specialised activity. Supporting participants with certain disabilities may require additional equipment, specific technical expertise, extra instructors and more time to ensure safety.

The access to the abseil requires you to ascend 118 steps and short 2m ladder to the roof of Coventry Cathedral.

If you would like to discuss your individual needs, please contact us as soon as possible by emailing events@mytonhospice.org so we can explore the options with you.

Q – How do I access the abseil?

A – The access to the abseil requires you to ascend 118 steps and short 2m ladder to the roof of Coventry Cathedral.

Q – What should I wear for my abseil?

A – Comfortable, sporty clothing is ideal. We recommend:

✔ Lace-up trainers for good grip✔ Jogging or training trousers for ease of movement✔ A long-sleeved t-shirt to help protect against grazes

Avoid loose clothing, scarves, jewellery, rings, and hooped earrings, as these can be a safety risk. Bring extra layers and a lightweight jacket – we can’t guarantee the weather, and it can feel much colder at height.

Q - Can people participate whilst in fancy dress?

A - Most costumes are fine, and the harness, helmet, etc. can be fitted over them. However, capes are not permitted and we reserve the right to not allow someone in fancy dress if we think the costume will compromise the safety of the participant. Please bring your costume on the day, but also bring a change of clothes.

Please email events@mytonhospice.org in advance to let us know the type of costume you will be wearing so we can check with our event organisers for its suitability.

Q - What is the maximum weight for participants?

A – There is no maximum weight limit for this event.

However, our safety harnesses do have size restrictions:

    • Maximum waist measurement: 150cm

    • Maximum thigh (upper leg) measurement: 90cm

If you are unsure whether the harness will fit comfortably, please contact us before booking and we will be happy to discuss this with you.

Q - What is the minimum weight for participants?

A - 6 stone (38kg) for abseils. Our event organiser reserve the right to prevent someone from doing an event if they are too light, and the weather is inclement, i.e. windy. Lighter people can get blown around more. This is not a frequent occurrence.

Q - Can someone participate if they’ve recently had an operation / injury?

A - We must be made aware of any relevant medical conditions. Any participants with medical conditions must have relevant medication such as an inhaler with them on the day for our event organisers to check.

If there is any uncertainty of participating due to either ongoing or recent medical conditions please contact us prior to signing up as it may require approval from a GP.

Q - Is the equipment safe?

A – From our event organisers Redpoint Birmingham:

"All equipment is checked by a qualified member of Redpoint staff prior to the rigging of abseil & throughout event, in accordance with Redpoint Climbing Centre safety policy.

Equipment is checked in accordance to the manufacturer’s guidelines and with a schedule inspected and approved by HSE AALA licensing.

Redpoint Climbing Centre has a current HSE AALA license, number R2134”

Q - Does Redpoint Birmingham use qualified instructors?

A - All Redpoint Birmingham staff have current Nationally Recognised Mountain Training qualifications and are first aid qualified.

Q - How will the event run?

A - The event will run in the following stages:

    • Please arrive and check in with The Myton Hospices event team 30 minutes before your allocated time slot.

    • You will then be handed over to the Redpoint team to be fitted with your safety equipment and attend a full safety briefing.

    • Once ready, you will be escorted through the building to the roof holding area.

    • You will then complete your abseil.

After your descent, Redpoint staff will assist you with landing safely. You will have the opportunity for photographs before your equipment is removed.

Q - What if English is not my first language?

A - For safety reasons, all participants must be able to fully understand and follow the instructions given by our instructors. Throughout the event, from the safety briefing to the abseil itself, clear communication is essential.

If a participant is unable to understand what to do, or when to do it, this could affect their ability to take part safely. The nature of the event, which can feel fast-paced and adrenaline-filled, makes it especially important that instructions are understood straight away.

If you or someone in your group may need translation support, please let us know as early as possible so we can discuss how best to support you.

    Q - What happens if I don’t raise the £200 minimum sponsorship?

A - We will support you as much as possible in the lead up to the event to help you reach your £200 fundraising target.

We ask participants to raise this minimum amount to help cover the cost of running the event and to support our overall fundraising target of £85,000.

As this is a minimum sponsorship event, if you have not raised the full £200 before the event, you will be asked to make up the shortfall as a donation to The Myton Hospices. For example, if you have raised £150, we would ask you to donate the remaining £50.

To take part, at least 80% of your minimum sponsorship (£160) must be raised by 11th June 2026. The full £200 must be raised by the date of your Coventry Cathedral Abseil.

We understand that circumstances can change. If you are experiencing any difficulties with your fundraising, please contact us as soon as possible at events@mytonhospice.org and we will be happy to talk it through with you.

  • The Myton Hospices - Jane Paton

The money you raise means we can make the most difficult times that little bit more manageable, and care for more people like Jane and her family…

Jane was 75 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021.

Shortly afterwards, she developed deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Delays in treating the DVT and completing the biopsies meant when Jane eventually had a PET scan, it revealed the cancer had already spread to her lungs and lymph nodes. Surgery was sadly no longer possible.

After difficult experiences with some of the oncologists she saw, Jane and her family decided against the treatment on offer, including a trial of extreme radiotherapy, and instead focused on keeping Jane as comfortable and happy as possible.

In 2025, Jane noticed blood in her bra and was diagnosed with a fungating tumour – a tumour that breaks through the skin. Further scans revealed the cancer had spread throughout her body.

Jane began accessing Myton’s Patient & Carer Wellbeing service and attended sessions at Coventry Myton Hospice, where she tried therapies such as Reiki, Indian Head Massage and Acupressure.

    Jane said:
“Going to the hospice every week was great. The hospice is so welcoming and the sun shines so beautifully in the building. I’ve never tried therapies like this before, but they work wonders. Myton has opened my eyes to new experiences. I even took my grandson once. He sat in the memory garden whilst I had my therapy and absolutely loved the serenity.”

In July 2025, Jane was admitted to Warwick Myton Hospice for wound care and pain management.

    Jane added:
“From the beginning of my journey with cancer, I’ve been terrified, never knowing what was going to happen from one minute to the next. But since coming to Myton and getting to know the doctors and nurses here, I’ve been able to trust people and understand what’s happening. The doctors are marvellous – they spend so much time explaining everything thoroughly so that I feel reassured.”

    Julian, Jane’s son, shared:
“When Mum was first admitted to Myton and at her most vulnerable, everyone was so friendly. The nurses introduced themselves, chatted about their lives, and really got to know us. When we were at our worst as a family, they were so approachable. Just seeing a friendly face made such a difference.”

    Emma, Jane’s daughter, said:
“It’s the little things here at Myton that make the biggest difference. We had a fish and chips takeaway one night, and I accidentally got curry sauce instead of mushy peas – the worst disappointment! But one of the nurses went into the kitchen after hours to get me mushy peas. The same nurse even brought in her homegrown tomatoes for Mum after she mentioned wanting a tomato sandwich. Everyone goes the extra mile and it’s such a kind gesture.”

Reflecting on her time at Myton, Jane said:
“For the care, support and service we’ve all received, I’d pay a fortune for this – it’s worth its weight in gold. I could’ve spent thousands of pounds on private care and it still wouldn’t have been as good as Myton. I’ve been treated with kindness, respect and dignity from the moment I arrived. I feel so privileged to have experienced this. It’s like I won the golden ticket.

“Of course it’s under horrible circumstances, but I wouldn’t have missed this for the world. The cancer will inevitably take me, but the memories we’ve made at Myton will stay with my family forever.”

Jane died peacefully at Warwick Myton Hospice, surrounded by her loved ones.

With your sponsorship and fundraising, we can help more people like Jane and her family when they need us most, now and in the future.
