Myton has been working collaboratively with UHCW to train senior ward nurses in delivering all aspects of palliative care

The Myton Hospices is helping to ensure people in Coventry and Warwickshire who are approaching the end of their life will be cared for with dignity and respect, through training senior nurses working at University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

Myton strives to work with local specialist Palliative Care Teams in NHS organisations to support health and social care professionals to provide the best care possible for people approaching the end of their lives.

A key role for the hospice team is in collaborating with education for professionals providing care towards the end of life.

UHCW...

Myton has been working collaboratively with UHCW to train senior ward nurses in delivering all aspects of palliative care.

The ‘Quality End of Life Care for All’ or QELCA© training was developed by St Christopher’s Hospice in London and has enabled Myton to work with clinical staff in University Hospital Coventry and Rugby Hospital of St Cross since 2013.

The training...

The most recent round of training has seen the senior ward nurses become ‘QELCA© Champions’ receiving training and spend time shadowing their Myton Mentors on our two Inpatient Units to see what they do in their everyday jobs. These champions will help transform and shape the end of life care on their respective wards in hospital.

In their time at Myton the champions experienced a variety of situations!

These situations included having conversations about a person’s future care and preferences, ‘Advance Care Planning’, identifying appropriate care for a patient approaching the end of life, engaging appropriately with patients and their families in conversations about the end of life and understanding what care is available in the community, and the importance of communicating across organisations and care settings.

The support...

The UHCW Palliative Care Team will support these QELCA© Champion nurses to improve patient care when they go back to their own wards. The nurses will also receive support from Myton over the coming months through regular action learning sessions.
