Volunteering FAQs

People volunteer for Myton for many reasons. Some of our volunteers have a personal connection to Myton and would like to give something back, some would like to meet new people and others want to gain new skills and experience. Whatever the reason, we would love you to join our volunteering team.

For the volunteer roles that have a specific skill e.g. Driving, Complementary Therapy, Hairdresser, you will need qualifications or experience specific to the role. For all other roles, just your willingness to support Myton and a spare couple of hours, and we will support you with the rest. 

All roles that require qualifications will be clearly stated on their vacancy pages, but if you are ever unsure you can contact us for more information. 

Depending on where you would like to volunteer, this can vary from one role to another. The minimum age for our retail roles at Myton is normally 14, with no maximum age.  For all other roles 16 or 18 would normally be the minimum.  All of our role descriptions will say what the minimum age is, so you will know before applying.

Whether you can donate two hours a week or two hours a year, there is a role for you at Myton.

Some roles include regular volunteering, and others could be a one off or for a specific period of time. There is a range of volunteering opportunities across  the organisation and we offer daytimes, evenings and weekends, There is something for everyone!

Here at Myton we are very luck to have lots of people offering their support to volunteer with us.  As such, some of our roles are not available all of the time.  If you see a role on our website that you are interested in, but it is not a current vacancy, please complete our 'Register your interest in volunteering’ form and we will be in touch to discuss alternative roles with you.  We also run a waiting list for some of our very popular roles.

Yes!

All roles require some element of training, including an induction to get you settled into your role at Myton. The type of training will depend on what role you do as there could be specific training to support you in your new role.  We also offer a timetable of further learning opportunities throughout the year that you can engage in as appropriate to your role and interests.

This will depend on what role you are going to be doing. If we need to carry out a criminal records check (now called a Disclosure and Barring Service or DBS check), we will provide you with all information and guidance to complete this.

The Myton Hospices believe that volunteers should not be out of pocket through volunteering. We will reimburse any reasonable out of pocket expenses incurred, such as travel in your own vehicle, or via public transport.

Everyone is different and the reality of being in an environment supporting individuals living with a terminal illness, whether in someone’s home or in the hospice, after you have been bereaved may be different to what you imagine.

This is something to consider before you apply and you can discuss this with one of the volunteering team. There are a range of different roles at Myton and you may want to think about volunteering in a different environment initially, for example volunteering for our fundraising team or our charity shops.

Once you’ve been volunteering with us for three months, we’d be happy to provide you with a character reference, and we will even provide you with a reference for up to three years after you leave.

Many people start volunteering when they are unemployed, as a way to learn new skills and gain experience, to help them find a job. You can volunteer while you receive jobseekers’ allowance, or universal credit, as long as you are still actively looking for work. We do understand that you may need to attend training or interviews and will be flexible around this. 

Yes, there’s a role for you at Myton. We would love to hear from anyone that is interested in volunteering, including if you are living with a disability.

Yes, if you are applying for asylum you can volunteer at Myton.
