On Sunday 21st September, Warwick Myton Hospice celebrated 43 years of The Myton Hospices with an 80s style birthday party!
In September 1982, the late Duchess of Kent officially opened the hospice, and since then we’ve been providing expert palliative and end of life care and support to people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families across Coventry and Warwickshire.

In the decades since, our services have grown to include our Coventry Myton Hospice, Rugby Myton Support Hub and Myton at Home, ensuring more people in our community can access the care they need, from diagnosis to end of life and beyond.
To mark the occasion, our Warwick Myton Hospice Inpatient Unit hosted a classic birthday party filled with nostalgia. Patients, their loved ones, staff and volunteers enjoyed balloons, music, and plenty of old-school favourites – including cheese and pineapple, sausage rolls, classic sandwiches, trifle, and jelly & ice cream. The celebrations continued with party bags filled with bubbles, sweets, whoopee cushions and quizzes.

Sharon Price, Senior Staff Nurse at The Myton Hospices and organiser of the event, along with her colleagues, said:
We had such a lovely day celebrating 43 wonderful years at Warwick Myton Hospice. To commemorate the amazing work that everyone has done over those years is truly humbling and we hope to be doing the same for the next 43 years.
Ruth Freeman, CEO at The Myton Hospices, added:
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been part of Myton’s amazing 43 years, including staff, volunteers, patients, families, donors and supporters. We simply wouldn’t be here, providing expert and compassionate care, without you. It is a privilege to support people and their families through such difficult times. Here’s to the next 43 years and beyond – our aspiration is to be here for everyone, now and forever!
Despite the generous support we have been truly fortunate to receive over the years, like many hospices across the UK, we are currently facing huge financial challenges.
Just 17% of our funding from the NHS and this year alone we need to raise £12.7 million of the £15.3 million it costs to continue providing our services free of charge to our patients and their loved ones. That’s over £1 million every month!

Rising costs, including Government increases to National Insurance and the minimum wage have added an unexpected £190,000 to our costs this year alone. We continue to see a rise in demand for our services and a waiting list for our hospice beds on most days.
We can’t continue to provide our vital services without the incredible support of our community. For 43 years you’ve stood with us – and with your help, we can continue to be here for everyone who needs us, now and in the future.
