Bedworth shop volunteer Ken Matthews wanted to complete 1,000 hours of volunteering for Myton this year. Instead he has doubled that number, clocking up his 2,000th hour on his late wife’s birthday!

It all started off as a joke between Ken and the shop’s manager, Deanna, about his new year’s resolution being to volunteer for over 1,000 hours. But as of November he had spent 2,000 hours volunteering at the shop!

Friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate Ken’s achievement and thank him for his dedication to the shop on Mill Street.

Shop manager, Deanna, said:

I can’t say a big enough thank you to Ken for his time and devotion; he’s at the shop every morning to hoover and tidy up and stays until I’ve locked up at the end of the day. All of our volunteers are like a family, and the day Ken joined the team was a blessed one.

And after a whirlwind 2019 which also included taking on our Zip Wire event, what would Ken’s wife, Isabel, have thought of everything?

I would have had her backing, but she would have called me crazy too. I really wanted to hit the 2,000 hours on her birthday. It’s a great team we have, we are a family.

You don’t have to commit to quite as many hours as Ken, but if you’re inspired by his dedication to Myton and want to get involved you can register your interest in Retail volunteering here.
