Norman Brown, aged 77, has completed an incredible 4,000-mile cycling challenge around the coastline of Great Britain, raising vital funds for The Myton Hospices to help ensure more local people living with a life-limiting illness can access specialist hospice care.
After being inspired by a book about circumnavigating the coastline of Great Britain, Norman decided to take on the challenge himself. He said:
I read an article many years ago about someone who walked the coast over two years. Last Christmas, someone gave me a book about cycling around the coastline of Great Britain. I was captivated and, before I knew it, I had planned my own route.
Over two and a half months, Norman cycled thousands of miles, completing his challenge in mid-August 2026. He added:
On the days I was cycling, I'd usually wake up at 7am for a wash and a light breakfast before setting off at 9am. I'd stop for breakfast around 10am, ride until lunchtime, and aim to arrive at my campsite by mid-afternoon to get everything set up before spending the evening planning the next day's route.
My favourite part was meeting people along the way and sharing why I was taking on the challenge. It was wonderful to speak to so many people and tell them about The Myton Hospices and the difference they make for local families.
Without a doubt, the toughest part was cycling through Devon and Cornwall. The climbs were short but incredibly steep, and tackling them during a heatwave made the challenge even harder.
As a personal trainer, I've spent many years working with people living with a wide range of health conditions. While I'm still able to take on challenges like this, I want to inspire others to make the most of every opportunity and never give up.
Working in Warwick, I've seen the incredible work Myton does and have taken part in their Cycle Challenge every year. I know how much it costs to provide their specialist care, so if I can help raise money to support that, it's absolutely worth every mile.
Norman has an incredible raised an incredible £1,455!
Sophie Wardle, Events Fundraiser at The Myton Hospices, said:
Cycling 4,000 miles around the coastline of Great Britain is an incredible physical and mental challenge, and we're so grateful that Norman chose to do it in support of The Myton Hospices.
Supporters like Norman make a real difference to the lives of people living with a life-limiting illness and their loved ones. Every mile he cycled and every pound he has raised will help us continue providing specialist care and support when it's needed most.
It costs over £15 million every year to provide our services free of charge to our patients and their loved ones. As a charity, with less than 20% of our funding coming from the NHS, we must raise more than £12 million this year. We rely on the generosity of our community, and simply couldn’t be here for local families without supporters like Norman.
