At The Myton Hospices, we know that facing a life-limiting illness or coping with bereavement can sometimes feel isolating. While clinical care is an important part of what we do, we also recognise the value of social connection and community support in helping people maintain their wellbeing.
Six months ago, we launched our Compassionate Neighbours Programme, becoming the first hospice in the Midlands to join the national Compassionate Neighbours network. The programme was developed to help reduce loneliness and social isolation by connecting people with trained volunteers who can offer regular companionship and support.
Since then, we have seen the positive impact these connections can have. Our Compassionate Neighbours volunteers have been spending time with people across Coventry and Warwickshire, building meaningful friendships and helping individuals stay connected to their local communities. Support looks different for everyone – it might involve meeting for a chat over a cup of tea, enjoying a walk together, attending a community group or simply having someone to talk to on a regular basis.
We are now looking to expand the programme and would like to encourage referrals from anyone who may benefit from this support. Referrals can be made by healthcare professionals, community organisations, family members, friends or individuals themselves.
As demand for the service continues to grow, we are also seeking new volunteers to join our Compassionate Neighbours team. The role offers an opportunity to make a genuine difference in someone's life by providing friendship, encouragement and a listening ear. Full training and ongoing support are provided, equipping volunteers with the skills and confidence to support people within their communities. Even an hour a week can make a huge difference to those we support.
Ruth Freeman, CEO of The Myton Hospices, said:
Social isolation can have a significant impact on a person's wellbeing, particularly when they are living with a life-limiting illness or following the loss of a loved one. Through our Compassionate Neighbours Programme, we are helping people build meaningful connections and maintain a sense of belonging within their community.
We are incredibly proud of what the programme has achieved in its first six months and grateful to the volunteers who have helped make it possible. As we continue to grow the service, we would encourage anyone who could benefit from support, or anyone interested in becoming a volunteer, to get in touch.
Together, we can help ensure that more people across Coventry and Warwickshire feel supported, connected and valued within their communities.
