Sustainable Fashion Week encourages people to think a little differently about the clothes they buy, wear and discard. The campaign shines a spotlight on the environmental impact of the fashion industry and invites everyone to explore more sustainable ways to enjoy fashion. One of the easiest ways to take part is something many people in our community already do – shopping second-hand.
In the UK, around 300,000 tonnes of used clothing ends up in landfill or is incinerated every year. With water usage, microplastic pollution and energy consumption among the key environmental impacts of fast fashion, Sustainable Fashion Week aims to educate and empower people to see sustainable fashion as a more accessible way of thinking and shopping.
Choosing pre-loved clothing is a simple but powerful way to help tackle these issues. Charity shops are a key part of sustainable fashion and, at The Myton Hospices, we have 26 shops across Coventry and Warwickshire that contribute to this. Every day, donated clothing is sorted by staff and volunteers before being resold in our shops and online. This not only gives shoppers the chance to find unique pieces but also ensures fewer clothes go to waste.
For charities like Myton, it also results in vital funds that help support important services in our hospices and in the community. Our charity shops play a crucial role in funding the care of 1 in 4 patients living with life-limiting illnesses across Coventry and Warwickshire. Every purchase made in one of our shops helps turn pre-loved clothing into practical support for people who need it most, now and in the future.
Anil Gupta, Head of Retail & Trading at The Myton Hospices, said:
Charity shops are a fantastic example of sustainable fashion in action. Every item donated to our shops gets the chance to be loved again, while also helping us raise vital funds for local hospice care.
By choosing to shop or donate with us, you’re not only making a sustainable choice but also supporting people in your community who are facing some of the most difficult times of their lives.
Did you know…? We are a charity and receive just 17% of our funding from the NHS. Every year, we have to raise over £12 million of the £15 million it costs to continue providing our services free of charge to our patients and their loved ones – that’s more than £1 million each month.
As the only hospice provider of specialist palliative and end of life care in Coventry and Warwickshire, we rely on our community to ensure people can access the care they need and deserve. By shopping or donating at one of our shops, you can make a real difference – not only for the environment but also for those living with a life-limiting illness.
Sustainable Fashion Week is a reminder that small choices can make a meaningful difference. Whether it’s choosing to shop second-hand, donating clothes you no longer wear, or encouraging friends and family to do the same, these simple actions help reduce waste while supporting local good causes.
