Seven nurses and two doctors from our Coventry Myton Hospice Inpatient Unit are conquering our Snowdon for Sunrise challenge in September. The group was formed by our very own Chad Khaira after the sad death of her son Talvin. Chad will be joined by 23 of her friends and family to walk in memory of Talvin.

Aman and Amar, Chad’s nieces, reflect:

As friends and family, we have been privileged to walk alongside Chad and some of the amazing nurses and doctors. In the worst of circumstances, this walk has brought a purpose for many of us in the family. It has encouraged us to get outdoors, get fit and be adventurous which is something we would have never imagined doing last year. Talv’s “just do it” attitude has motivated all of us to face this challenge with courage.

Since the passing of Talvin, Chad has found comfort in the support that she has received from colleagues, friends and family. Chad added:

I have seen first-hand that the ‘One Myton’ ethos has been apparent with everyone supporting me through this really difficult time. I am eternally grateful for the compassion and love that continues to be shown to myself, my husband Gully and younger son Jay. A gift of a ring with Talvins fingerprints was given to me from all of the teams at Myton and will forever link me to such a special place, The Myton Hospices.

The Myton team work tirelessly to support grieving families but it has been especially challenging to support their own colleague and friend through this difficult time of grief.

Lizzy Jenkins, Research Nurse at The Myton Hospices, commented;

Grief brings people together in unexpected ways, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of this group of people as we feel a deep sense of solidarity with each other. The walk up Snowdon will be a memorable experience for all of us who have walked the journey with Chad and the family over recent times.

Juliet Howard, Clinical Practice Educator at The Myton Hospices, added:

The group is proof of the impact Talvin and Chad have had on all our lives. There is a lot of love for them and we’ve all be touched by it. Great people gravitate to Chad, she brings out the best in people, so we all know it will be a lovely walk.

Working for Myton for a combined 100 years, they commented on why fundraising for Myton is important for them. Jane Powell, a retired Senior Staff Nurse from Myton, said:

I think Myton holds a special place in all our hearts, and collectively we’ve all given a lot of years to the organisation. We know first-hand the quality of care that’s given to patients and their families and how this needs to continue for many years to come. Even though Talvin wasn’t cared for by Myton, it makes sense to fundraise for a charity that eases the lives of people experiencing death and grief.

Bal, a friend of Chad’s, added:

When Chad lost her son, she took off her Myton hat and became a grieving parent herself. Whilst the climb up Snowdon will be a challenging experience, we will all walk together to remember Talvin and raise money for Myton so that they can continue to support other families going through difficult times.

Louise McCreath, Senior Staff Nurse, said:

I think we’re all really looking forward to the climb, adrenaline and excitement will be on our side! We’re all a little apprehensive about the walk down and how it will impact our knees! Though I think the main thing is achieving it together, that’s the most important thing!

So far, the group have smashed their target, reaching £5,000
three months before the climb!
