Jenna and her husband Johnny Carlin own a Renewable business, Render Right Finishes Ltd.
Jenna’s Nan, Betty Moffat, was diagnosed with lung cancer but unfortunately, she couldn’t receive treatment due to heart failure. After a few years of living with the slow growth tumour, Betty was in and out of hospital. In early June 2024, Betty was admitted to Coventry Myton Hospice.
Jenna said:
We knew of Myton before Nan was admitted and have fundraised in the past, but having this first hand experience has really highlighted how amazing Myton truly is and the whole family can’t imagine a better place for Nan to be at this incredibly important time.
Jenna’s husband, Johnny, added:
Coming to Myton for end of life care, you inevitably know what the outcome will be, and at a time where emotions were heightened, Myton was a calm and gentle place. She was so happy, probably happier than she was at home towards the end, which meant so much to us all. We couldn’t have wished for anything else.
Jenna continued:
It was all down to the staff, the atmosphere they create and the relationships they make with the patients and their families makes such a difference. Nan was a character so I’m sure they had fun with her, but the way they treated us as her family was so unexpected. Of course we knew the care for Nan would be amazing, but the support they give families is equally as amazing. They had the time to sit with us, talk to us, get to know us, and just be there for us. It was a home from home and was like we had a new extended family.
Betty was at our Coventry Myton Hospice for seven weeks during the summer. Jenna commented:
Being at Myton during the summer was lovely. Nan absolutely loved the garden. She was able to go outside and enjoy the sunshine and pick some flowers. It was so peaceful. Another patient also had some fluffy visitors whilst Nan was at Myton, so she managed to meet some alpacas! We never grew up with pets or animals so knew this was a new experience for her, but she looked so happy and amused with them! Having all these memories from the last weeks of Nan’s life is so precious.
Betty sadly died on 28th July surrounded by her family, aged 83 years old.
We are so lucky to be able to have had this time with Nan at Myton. She was as pain free and comfortable as possible and died with dignity. We are so grateful for the amazing care we all received.
Jenna and Johnny via their plastering and rendering business, Render Right Finishes, have pledged to make a donation to Myton every December in memory of Betty. Jenna and Johnny have started the tradition by donating an amazing £14,500 towards our Urgent Appeal.
Claire McDowell, Coventry Fundraising and Front of House Lead, said:
We are blown away by Jenna and Johnny’s support and can’t thank them enough for this incredibly generous donation. We launched our Urgent Appeal earlier this year to raise £240,000 to fund the recruitment, training and salary of five registered nurses for a year, so more people, like Betty, can access a Hospice Bed when they need it. Jenna and Jonny’s donation will make a massive difference to this goal – thank you!
