We are shining a light on members of our incredible staff to get to know them better. Under the spotlight today is one of our amazing Occupational Therapists (OT), Ellie Holt!
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Caring, family-orientated and impatient!
What does your role entail?
As an OT, I work with patients to establish what is most important to them and then support them in working towards this goal.
This could be maintaining independence in activities, managing fatigue, or it could be ensuring a person has all the equipment, adaptations and advice required to be safe at home.
I work with patients on the inpatient units, outpatients in the Wellbeing Service and help facilitate the Fatigue and Breathlessness education sessions.
The therapy team run several groups for our patients, and I facilitate the Horticultural Therapy Group alongside Therapy Assistant Kath.
How did you come to work at Myton?
My family have always regarded Myton very highly due to the level of support and compassion that my Nanna received in 2007.
She was really well looked after as an inpatient, and when she had expressed her wishes to be at home, Myton had arranged for her to be discharged the same day with all the equipment and care she needed.
It was an aspiration of mine to work for Myton after qualifying as an OT, but I built up a few years’ experience first before applying three years ago.
If you had to describe Myton in three words, what would they be?
Warm, compassionate and safe.
What is a skill you’d like to learn and why?
I would really love to be an expert gardener for two reasons – firstly to use this skill to benefit our Horticultural Therapy Group at Myton, and secondly to create a beautiful garden at home for a bit of escapism!
If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would you pick and why?
I’d like to go for dinner with Adele, she seems funny and down to earth and would maybe sing a few songs!
What would be on the menu?
I have a sweet tooth and love a bit of baking so I think I would have a 3 course desert menu… maybe something chocolatey, followed by something fruity, and end with an affogato (which I recently tried for the first time)!
If you could travel to any event past, present or future, what would it be and why?
I’ve seen clips of Queen at Live Aid… being there in that moment would have been amazing!
What do you like to do in your free time?
I have two children, Rose is 4 years old and Rupert is 1, and they take up most of my free time! My husband and I are in the process of slowly decorating our home and re-doing our garden so I have been enjoying watching lots of interior design programmes and Pinteresting ideas.
What is your favourite book or film?
I do like the Harry Potter books & films (typical millennial) and I have a bad memory so every time I read them it feels like the first time!
Anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
I love working at Myton and am really grateful to be part of such a wonderful place!
How does the public’s support help our patients?
The incredible support from the public means that Myton can continue to provide compassionate care to patients and their families at a very difficult time.
This support ranges from donations and fundraising, and includes all our wonderful volunteers who play a crucial role in supporting patients and their families, and those who raise awareness of how great Myton is.
By playing the lottery, you are helping us care for more people living with life-limiting illnesses, and their families, when they need us most, now and in the future.
