On 16th March 2023, Maggie McMahon was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and after a year of fighting, Maggie sadly started to deteriorate. The team at the hospital arranged for Maggie to be admitted to Coventry Myton Hospice in March of this year.
Maggie’s husband, Mick, said:
I can’t begin to describe how much Myton means to me and my family. The care they gave to Maggie was amazing. She was so well looked after and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. When she was first admitted, we noticed a huge change in Maggie – she was so content and relaxed, and was livelier and more upbeat.
As a family, we are so grateful for all the love and support the nurses showed Maggie. They got her pain under control so she was as comfortable as possible and that’s all we ever wanted.
The care extended to us as well, they really looked after me and my children. We were able to stay the night so we could be as close to Maggie as possible. The staff, volunteers and the cleaners at Myton were incredibly kind and friendly.
When Maggie started to deteriorate the volunteers would offer us more tea and regularly checked in with us, making the final moments with Maggie so peaceful.
After Maggie died in April 2024, the family decided to raise money for Myton in her memory. In lieu of flowers at her funeral, family and friends donated an amazing £817.
With Mick, Emily and Maggie working at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire, with Maggie spending 30 years of her career at the hospital, they were also showered with incredible support from colleagues, raising a wonderful £761, totalling over £1,500 for Myton.
Mick added:
We can’t thank Myton enough and we will be forever grateful for the staff and how they made Maggie feel on her final days. She was such a special woman with such a warm heart, spreading kindness wherever she went, and we are so happy that Myton gave her the care she deserved.
To show our appreciation we want to raise as much money as we can so Myton can be there for every family that needs their incredible support. We’ve started a new tradition of raising money every year on Maggie’s anniversary.
Everyone at The Myton Hospices would like to thank Mick, Emily and their friends, family and colleagues for all their support.
We need to raise £11 million this year to continue providing our services free of charge to patients and their loved ones across Coventry and Warwickshire.
