Our amazing nurses took on Scafell Pike last month to raise vital funds for The Myton Hospices…

A group of our amazing nurses at Coventry Myton Hospice Inpatient Unit conquered the tallest mountain in England, standing at almost 1,000m, to raise vital funds for The Myton Hospices.

Kerry, Charlotte, Aggie and Tracie took on the challenge for Myton, they were joined by Aggie’s friend Sam.

Kerry Merry, Senior Staff Nurse, commented on why she wanted to tackle this challenge:

I like to keep challenging myself and as I am unable to skydive, I decided I needed to take on things where my feet stay on the ground – though I did do Myton’s abseil last year, which was amazing! I did the Inflatable 5k with my son last year too.

Raising money for Myton is very important to me, enabling me, the other nurses and all the staff to carry on giving the best possible care to our patients and their relatives at the end of life.

Charlotte Richmond, Staff Nurse, added:

I’ve always wanted to take on one of Myton’s challenge events, and it just so happens I’ve always wanted to climb Scafell Pike too, so this event was perfect for me!

But the main reason to signing up was the thought of getting to the top and hopefully having a clear morning to see the sunrise. I thought it would be a beautiful experience to share with the whole climb team and I was definitely right!

Echoing what Kerry said, working as a nurse at Myton, you can see first-hand the difference the hospice makes to both patients and their families in the community.

To be able to provide that care and be involved in their lives at a variety of stages throughout their illness is a privilege. Fundraising for Myton is so important to ensure my colleagues and I can continue to provide the vital support needed by many.

Tracie Harris, Nursing Assistant, said:

I wanted to challenge myself and do something to help raise funds for Myton. This was completely out of my comfort zone and due to my own health issues, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do this.

However, I am extremely proud and happy that I did, and my granddaughter was tracking my every step on an app on her phone.

Fellow Nursing Assistant, Aggie Heanes, added:

I have always been into fitness, but wanted a different kind of challenge. It was harder than I thought it would be, but I achieved it and reached my goal, and I raised vital money for Myton at the same time. I was also able to share the experience with my friend, Sam Blyth.

Preparing for the four-hour trek, Kerry enlisted the help of her dog, Barney, to get her steps in for her training. Charlotte continued:

I went to the gym a couple of times a week, and did a mix of cardio and strength training, in the hopes of building enough strength in my legs to get me to the top! And it worked!

The nurses climbed Scafell Pike in the early hours of Sunday 2nd June, getting to the summit by sunrise. Charlotte said:

It was a tough climb but the whole experience was incredible! It feels like such an accomplishment and was an experience I won’t forget!

We are amazed by the support shown by these incredible ladies! Together with Aggie’s friend, Sam, the group raised over £3,700!

Thank you so much for everything you do for Myton – we couldn’t provide such amazing care without you!

And a huge thank you to all of our wonderful supporters who took part! Together you have raised over £39,079 which is truly phenomenal!
