We are excited to announce the opening of our new Children’s Chill Out Room, a safe and calm space dedicated to the counselling and wellbeing of children and young people whose loved ones received support from The Myton Hospices.
This wonderful initiative was made possible by the generous grant of £5,000 from the Rugby Group Benevolent Fund, with inspiration coming from the previous Mayor of Rugby, Cllr Maggie O’Rourke.
Her vision of dedicating a safe space for children at our Rugby Myton Support Hub was vital in getting this project off the ground back in February 2024. After months of planning and hard work, we are delighted to see this idea come to fruition.
To mark the special occasion, our very own Tracey Evans, Patient and Carer Wellbeing Lead, and Chris Willmott, Partnerships Manager, were honoured to be joined by Cllr Maggie, along with Ian Southcott and Graeme Fuller from the Rugby Group Benevolent Fund.
We are incredibly grateful for all the support shown by Cllr Maggie, Ian, Graeme and everyone at the Rugby Group Benevolent Fund, who have been instrumental in opening this room for children in the Rugby area.
The room is filled with colour, toys, books and quotes to help children through difficult times and challenging conversations. We are so grateful to the students at Rugby School, Georgie, Hebe and Eve, led by their talented teacher, Joseph Ryan, for designing and painting the beautiful rainbow mural on the wall.
Their creativity has transformed the space into a warm and welcoming environment.
Tracey Evans, Patient and Carer Wellbeing Lead for The Myton Hospices, said:
Children need a safe space to be themselves in an inviting environment so they are able to share their worries and concerns. Having this new space at our Rugby Myton Support Hub will be so important for children going through difficult times following the death of a loved one.
Debbie Frost, Counselling, Bereavement and Family Support Services Lead, added:
Having a dedicated room where children can feel safe and supported is invaluable. It allows us to provide the focused care they need during challenging times. The room is a testament to the power of community support and the profound impact it can have on young lives.
We also took a moment to recognise the extraordinary support of Cllr Maggie O’Rourke throughout her time as Mayor of Rugby. Choosing Myton as her Charity of the Year, her dedication to our cause has been unwavering, and alongside other councillors in Rugby, she has raised almost £11,000!
Chris Willmott said:
We cannot be more grateful for her relentless commitment and generosity, which has been instrumental in enhancing our services for the people of Rugby. This year, we have to raise £11 million of the £14.3 million it costs to continue providing our services free of charge to people and their families across Coventry and Warwickshire. Without the support from people like Cllr Maggie, this simply wouldn’t be possible.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Rugby Group Benevolent Fund, Cllr Maggie O’Rourke, the talented students at Rugby School and those who have supported the project.
