100-year-old superstar has supported The Myton Hospices for several years through her hobby… knitting!

At an incredible 100 years old, Hilda has been knitting for nearly a century, using her lifelong hobby to make a difference in her community.

At four years old, Hilda’s mum taught her to knit and she started making clothes for her dolls to enjoy. By age 10, Hilda had progressed to knitting her own cardigans and jumpers.

For several years now, Hilda has dedicated her craft to supporting The Myton Hospices. Her daughter-in-law Jane shared:

When the Myton shop opened on Ball Hill in May 1994, mum began crocheting what she called ‘knee blankets’, making one a week with her youngest son, Robin, dropping them off at the shop to sell. The shop collected any donated wool and would give it to Robin to pass on to mum to use on the blankets.

However, Myton isn’t the only charity benefiting from Hilda’s creations, as she has also donated her knitting to hospital units and orphaned children. Jane added:

In the last few years, she has knitted cardigans and jumpers for young orphaned children living in Eastern Europe. Along with her neighbour and friend Audrey, mum also knitted hats and mittens for the Premature Baby Unit at Coventry Hospital.

My husband’s friend Mike, who volunteered at the hospital, then took them up to the unit. As mum no longer sews her knitted items up, a family friend, Pauline, now does that for her. She has a little production line going on!

Claire McDowell, Coventry Fundraising and Front of House Lead at The Myton Hospices, said:

Hilda’s commitment to helping Myton and other deserving causes is truly remarkable. Her generosity and hard work over the years have made a real difference to our ability to provide vital care for people living with life-limiting illnesses in Coventry and Warwickshire. We are so grateful for everything Hilda has done. Thank you, Hilda!
