Rebecca undertook a significant physical challenge by participating in a Hyrox event in memory of her sister, Katie

Katie first discovered a lump in early 2022 and was given her cervical cancer diagnosis in February 2022. Having undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Katie was told in September her cervix looked clear but a spot had appeared on her lung which was put it down to an infection.

In January 2023, scans revealed the spot was cancerous and it had spread rapidly. The family were told the cancer was terminal and to start to prepare for the future.

A few months later, Katie was admitted to our Warwick Myton Hospice in April 2023 where she spent her last few weeks surrounded by her loved ones, including her two young boys. Katie died on 17th June 2023, aged just 37 years old.

Rebecca said:

Long before her diagnosis, Katie moved back home to settle with her gorgeous family, and it was my dream come true. We had so many plans. We had lots of fun, trouble making of course, which mostly centred around sport and challenging ourselves. She was everyone’s cheerleader, but she was always my biggest cheerleader. She made me believe I could, and should, do anything I wanted. She was always fearless and brave.

Rebecca wanted to give back to Myton in a way that would perfectly honour her relationship with her sister. She set herself one very big challenge – in October 2024, Rebecca took part in a Hyrox event, a form of fitness racing where participants run 1km, followed by 1 functional workout station, repeated eight times.

Rebecca said:

I knew I wanted to honour Katie and raise money and awareness for The Myton Hospices. I wanted to really challenge myself and thought that circuit training on steroids – which is basically what Hyrox is – would be a great way for me to fundraise in memory of Katie.

I was so nervous beforehand. I endured pain, injuries and mental challenges in the training and lead up to the event, but it was nothing compared to what Katie went through.

Rebecca raised an amazing £2,426, smashing her £1,000 target!

Rebecca added:

It was definitely a big challenge, but it was extraordinary. I knew I could do it because she was by my side the whole time.

I can’t put into words how special Myton is. They gave Katie her spirit back and provided her with comfort in those last few precious months. They gave her and us as her family everything.

Everyone at The Myton Hospices would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Rebecca and everyone who supported her fundraising.

The support from people in our community, like Rebecca, is crucial in ensuring we can be there for more people, like Katie, living with life-limiting illnesses and their families in Coventry and Warwickshire when they need us most, now and in the future.
